Phoenix was built on the ruins of the Hohokom people, whose irrigation canals would be reused by modern residents nearly 400 years later. Named after the legendary Egyptian bird, a symbol of rebirth, Phoenix was also called “the place is hot” by the Navajo. The near-perfect weather led to a population boom during World War II when military training centers other defense industries brought in a flux of new residents.
Northeast Phoenix is in the Paradise Valley School District, an award-winning and well-respected district that is celebrating its centennial anniversary in 2014. Schools include Desert Shadows Elementary and Middle Schools, Indian Bend Elementary School, Sunrise Middle School, and the high school's Horizon, Paradise Valley, and Pinnacle. The private non-denominational K-12 school Scottsdale Christian Academy is also in the area and has an impressive graduation rate of nearly 100%.
Paradise Valley Community College, located at Union Hills Drive and 32nd Street, offers two-year degrees, continuing education courses, and vocational training. Its Center for the Performing Arts has a diverse calendar of events, many of which are completely free.
Parks, golf courses, and open-air shopping plazas can be enjoyed year-round, from the weekly farmer’s market at Roadrunner Park to the outdoor fireplace, live music, and children’s Splash Pad at The Scottsdale Quarter. This relatively flat area is also just minutes away from fantastic hiking opportunities at North Mountain Park and the Sonoran Desert Preserve. For spa lovers, facials and reflexology as well as Swedish and Deep Tissue massages, are offered at Revive Spa at the JW Marriott Desert Resort was named one of the Top Resort Spas in the U.S. by Conde Nast Traveler Magazine.
Just south of the 101 on Tatum Boulevard is the Musical Instrument Museum, a one-of-a-kind cultural gem. This interactive and engaging museum focuses on musical instruments from around the world, and also holds concerts at the MIM Music The
Desert Ridge Marketplace is one of Arizona’s premier shopping and entertainment destinations, with over 110 retailers and restaurants and an 18-screen AMC movie theater. From Target and DSW to Hollister and Charming Charlie, Desert Ridge is a mix of unique specialty stores and national retailers.
Paradise Valley Mall is currently under redevelopment for a mix-use space including, residential, shopping and restaurants. A branch of the Phoenix Public Library is just next door.
The Wildfire Golf Club at the J.W. Marriott Desert Ridge Resort is among the best in the Valley with two 18-hole courses designed by golf legends Arnold Palmer and Nick Faldo. Two putting greens, an all-grass driving range, and the Wildfire Golf Shop, ranked in Golfworld’s Top 100 Best Golf Shops in 2008, complete the experience. The Paradise Valley Golf Course also features a picturesque, challenging course and a recently renovated clubhouse and bar & grill.
